Critical Reflection from Project 1
One of my favorite quotes by data visualization expert Stephen Few states: “Numbers have an important story to tell. They rely on you to give them a clear and convincing voice.” I think that one of the many great methods of communication includes the presentation of rational data. This method is so much more than just the sophisticated formation of appealing graphs; it can go as far as encouraging us to make powerful insights in relation to ourselves and our surroundings that may even influence a specific audience somehow. By undertaking this project, I have had the opportunity to reach the conclusion that we, as human beings, are evenly as capable of control and driving change as our devices are. My data is proof of that as my initial assumption that I would be able to see a noticeable increase in Australian advertisements was accepted. As a former Lebanese resident who recently arrived down under, I also saw a decrease in engagement with Lebanon as a whole. As for the content from the States, that predictably remained the ruling one which is also the case in our everyday lives where it is overrated. Now, have you ever asked yourself what the correct definition of the term ‘culture’ is? Well, it doesn’t exist. Throughout my collection phases, I was invited to compare and contrast the habits and customs of countries with distinct cultures, whether that be through the symbols of music, clothing, or food, bearing in mind the other existing 192 nations. This draws my attention to how important inclusivity is in structuring my personality towards openness. Despite still having so many unanswered questions, this truly has been enlightening.
